Indian teams disappoint

NEW DELHI: The Indian girls finished 12th among 16 teams in the World Junior under-14 tennis Finals at Prostejov, Czech Republic. The boys’ team just about managed to avoid the wooden spoon by taking the 14th place.

The girls team of Aishwarya Aggarwal, Rishika Sunkara and Shweta Chandra Rana lost to the third-seeded Russia and the fifth-seeded Britain rather tamely in the league, hardly winning many games in the singles rubbers.

Shweta and Aishwarya won only one game each against Britain’s Laura Robson and Jessica Ren respectively in the singles matches. The girls, however, did well to stretch the doubles to three sets both against Russia and Britain.

The Indian girls redeemed some of their pride by beating Argentina 2-1 in the third league match. Rishika beat Mikale Irazusta 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 while Aishwarya downed Catalina Pella 6-2, 6-4.

Lone victory

Later, in the positional matches, India lost 1-2 Serbia, with the lone victory being well earned by Rishika against Jovana Jaksic at 7-5, 2-6, 9-7.

The girls lost their last match 0-3 against Indonesia 0-3, in the tie for the 12th place.

In the boys event, Sai Karthik fought well for India both against the fourth-seeded Slovakia and the fifth-seeded Czech Republic, but the team still could not win a rubber.

The team went down 1-2 to Egypt as well, and thus fell below the level of its girls team.

It was Mohit Mayur who provided the first win for India as he beat Karim Hossam of Egypt 6-3, 7-6(3), but Sai Karthik could not pull his weight both in his singles and doubles in that tie.

However, India managed to pin down Belarus 2-1, as Sai won both his singles and doubles.

Sai beat Aleksandr Bulitski 6-3, 6-2 and partnered Mohit Mayur for a 6-4, 6-7(7), 6-4 victory over Aleksandr and Yaroslav Zubko.

In the match for the 13th place, India lost 0-3 to Britain, with Sai once again putting up a good fare in singles and doubles.
