HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy urged people to desist from “unnecessary agitations” and instead cooperate with him to reap the full benefits from the schemes grounded by his Government.

Speaking at the 61st Independence Day celebrations after unfurling the national tricolour, he said a dedicated effort was needed from everyone to achieve the full results of these schemes as no amount of work by a single minister or official would suffice. “Cooperation from all sides is the need of the hour,” he said, in what was considered an oblique reference to the land struggle of the Left parties.

The Chief Minister highlighted the massive distribution of 4.37 lakh acres of cultivable lands and 12 lakh house-sites undertaken by his Government. Dr. Reddy disclosed that he would hereafter “concentrate on 20 subjects as a strategy” such as weaker sections’ welfare, land distribution, housing, market intervention to reduce prices of essential commodities, corporate-type healthcare to the poor under Rajiv Arogyasri, apart from agriculture and information technology.

Guard of honour

He earlier received a guard of honour at an impressive march-past by 21 armed and other contingents.

A feature of the celebrations was a cultural programme, Bharateeyam, presented by 2,000 school children depicting the War of Independence beginning with the sepoy mutiny.

He said the fourth phase of land distribution and extension of Rajiv Arogyasri programme of issuing 80 lakh health cards to the poor would be launched in November.
