Good response to Pookkalam Contest

Thiruvananthapuram: The Pookkalam Contest 2007 being organised by The Hindu MetroPlus in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram on August 25 has evoked an enthusiastic response.

The venue in Kochi is Assisi Vidyaniketan Public School, Chembumukku, Kakkanad, and in Thiruvananthapuram, the Government Women’s College Auditorium, Vazhuthacaud.

Each participating team should have five members, including the captain, three of whom should be women and all aged above 15.

The teams should register in advance. For registration in Kochi, call ph: 230 1653 or e-mail priyashiju@thehindu.co.in and in Thiruvananthapuram, dial 250 2001 or e-mail ranju_raj@thehindu.co.in. Only 50 teams will be able to participate in each centre. Registration will be on a first come, first served basis.

The pookkalams can be circular or square, but diameter/length and breadth should not exceed 5 ft. They should have a minimum area of 20 sq. ft. and a maximum of 25 sq. ft. The flowers will have to be arranged by the participants, but a sum of Rs.500 will be reimbursed towards the expense after the contest. Natural flowers and leaves alone should be used. No vegetables or artificial dyes will be allowed.

The participants should report at the information counters at the venues at 8.30 a.m. on the day of the contest, get their number and space and start preparing the pookkalams at 9.30 a.m. The time allowed will be two-and-a-half hours, which includes time for drawing the sketch and arranging the flowers.

Innovation in design and concept, harmony of colours, and neatness of the pookkalams are the factors that will be considered by the judges.

Exciting prizes are up for grabs. The first prize is Rs.20,000; second Rs.12,500; and third Rs.7,500. Consolation prizes of Rs.1,500 will be given to 10 teams. All teams will get gifts.

The venue will be open to the public from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
