THANJAVUR: Independence Day was celebrated with gaiety and enthusiasm here on Wednesday. District Collector C. Vijayaraj Kumar hoisted the national flag and took the salute at a ceremonial police parade. He honoured 250 freedom fighters and distributed benefits to the tune of Rs.32.68 lakh to 48 persons. Cultural programmes by students followed the flag hoisting. Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Thanjavur range, Abash Kumar, Superintendent of Police Amit Kumar Singh and District Revenue Officer Karunakaran particiapted. Later, the Collector participated in a ‘samabandhi bojanam’ at Punnainallur Mariamman Temple. At the Tamil University here, Vice-Chancellor C. Subramaniam hoisted the national flag. In Tiruvarur, Collector Shambu Kallolikar hoisted the national flag at a colourful function here after taking the salute at a ceremonial police parade. He honoured freedom fighters, besides distributing benefits to the tune of Rs.17.81 lakh to 126 persons. Superintendent of Police Anita Hussain and other officials participated. Nagapattinam Collector Tenkasi S. Jawahar hoisted the national flag at the Sports Stadium Grounds. Accompanied by Superintendent of Police Kalpana Nayak, he inspected an impressive guard of honour presented by the police, the Home Guards and the National Cadet Corps and took the salute at the march-past. Mr. Jawahar distributed assistance to the tune of Rs.62.21 lakh to 192 beneficiaries under Government welfare schemes and honoured 30 freedom fighters, which included women. He also presented awards to several panchayats for achieving cent per cent collection in property and other taxes for 2006-07. Later, the Collector along with Ms. Nayak, A.K.S. Vijayan, MP, and others took part in the ‘samabandhi bhojanam’ at the Nellukadai Mariamman temple here.
