I-Day focusses on poverty eradication, sanitation

VILLUPURAM: The Independence Day celebrations held here on Wednesday focussed on poverty eradication, total sanitation and creation of jobs. District Collector Brajendra Navnit hoisted the Tricolour and took the salute on the Collectorate campus.

He honoured 35 freedom fighters and distributed welfare assistance of Rs 61.21 lakh to 97 beneficiaries, including tricycles to the physically challenged.

The Collector gave away financial aid worth Rs 10.64 lakh to three panchayat poverty eradication sanghams: Chithazhampattu (Rs 2.90 lakh), Sornavur (Rs 4.30 lakh) and Palli Deviyanur (Rs 3.44 lakh).

The aid will be utilised by the members for starting self-help ventures such as setting up lathes and other units. Mr. Navnit issued certificates to 16 officials for achieving savings scheme target, eight members of the Indian Red Cross Society, and eight meritorious students, who scored high ranks in the SSLC and Plus-Two examinations.

The Collector also honoured 10 panchayat presidents for having achieved total sanitation, three self-help groups and the Pallavan Grameen Bank for their contribution to society. He gave certificates of appreciation to three panchayat unions — Vanur, Chinna Salem and Kalvarayan Hills — and three Block Development Offices — Vanur, Thirukkoilur and Thirunavalur.

Of the 15 schools that staged the culturals, the A. K. T. Matriculation School and Ramakrishna Mission School bagged prizes. Later, the Collector participated in the Grama Sabha meeting at Kodima.
