Women asked to take active part in Arivoli Iyakkam
NAMAKKAL: Women in the district have increasingly become aware of their rights after the formation self help groups (SHG), said Namakkal Collector G. Sundaramurthi. Participating at the Gram Sabha meeting at Kalankani village in Puduchatram union near here on Wednesday, the Collector said that woman, particularly their representatives in local bodies, had gained the courage to ask the officials about the Governments welfare and development schemes. He also asked the women and others to participate in the Arivoli Iyakkam to achieve 100 per cent literacy rate in the district. Mr. Sundaramurthi told the villagers that sending children to works instead of schools was a shame on the parents. Child labour in any form should not be tolerated. The Government also had been allotting special funds for the village panchayat, which declared that there was no child labour in its panchayat. Greening the villages and judicious use of water resources at village level were essential criteria for successful performance of any village panchayat. The Collector pointed out that Namakkal district stood first among districts in executing development schemes. HIV-AIDs-free district should be created. Those who participated included the village Union chairperson Indira Ramalingam, Village president K.P.DUrairaj, Assistant Director (Panchayats) Mahalingam, Public Relations Officer K. Kannadasan and others. Later he took part in the `sama bandhi bojan at Lakshmi Narasimha Swami temple at Namakkal. In Salem district, District Revenue Officer M. Rajarathinam participated at the Gram Sabha meeting at Gejjalnaickenpatti in Panamarathupatti union. He insisted on the people to promote individual toilets for total sanitation in rural areas. Village panchayats should strive hard to win Gram Nirmal Puraskar awards for total sanitation. Five panchayats in Salem district had won the award. Mr. Rajarathinam added that government had sanctioned Rs 3 lakh to create basic infrastructure in every village. All the village panchayats had been given phone connection. A sum of Rs 20 lakh had been allotted for each village under the Anaithu Gramma Anna Marumalarchi Scheme. Village president Ganga Ramesh participated. Salem RDO K. Kaja Moideen participated at Sukkampatti village in Ayodhiapattinam union.
