New Democracy seeks basic facilities in PHCs

BERHAMPUR: The CPI-ML (New Democracy) has been organising demonstrations at various places demanding basic medical facilities in rural areas of South Orissa.

In the last two weeks agitations related to continuing problems at rural health centres have been held at places like Mohana, Paralakhemundi, Sorada, Shergarh, Manikpur, Badgad, Daringbadi, Brhamanigaon, Shergarh etc. State convener of the party B.C.Sarangi said that their main aim was to generate awareness among people about proposed privatisation of health services by the State Government, fake drugs and female foeticide.

"But we are highlighting the local problems related to health services to make people and administration know what the rural areas lack," he said.

On August 14 at Manikpur of Ganjam district the non-availability of a doctor at the local Primary Health Centre (PHC) for the last 12 years became the major issue.

The PHC is allegedly managed by a pharmacist since long. Following the agitation the Chief District Medical Officer had promised to post a doctor to the PHC.

During the demonstration at Sorada of Ganjam district on August 9 the main issue was absence of posted doctors at the Community Health Centre and non payment of full cash incentive under the Janani Surakhya Yojana to the mothers delivering babies at the health centre.

The agitators brought the issue of sale of fake medicines to the fore at Shergarh in Ganjam district when they alleged that most of the medicine shops in their area did not have proper licences.
