A date with history: Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda distributing sweets to prisoners of Central Jail on the 60th Independence Day in Ambala on Wednesday.
CHANDIGARH: Haryana Governor A.R. Kidwai on Wednesday appealed to the people to rise above petty politics and work unitedly to make India a leading nation. Unfurling the National Flag at Kaithal, Dr. Kidwai asserted that sincere efforts should be made to eradicate poverty, illiteracy and unemployment. India, he asserted, was poised to become a leading economic power by 2020 and one of the three great economic powers of the world by 2040. He said Haryana had become the second most progressive state in the country due to its hardworking populace. The State Government, he added, was trying to uplift the living standard of rural people by providing health, education, veterinary, piped water and other facilities in the villages. He asked people to impart quality education to their children. Paying warm tributes to the known and unknown martyrs and freedom fighters, he said that the latest historical facts indicated that the struggle of Independence had started from Ambala and not from Meerut. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda in his Independence Day address in Ambala announced schemes for the welfare of the people, especially ex-Servicemen. These included allotment of land to the Army authorities for construction of dispensaries for ex-servicemen, construction of a memorial in Ambala to commemorate the memory of martyrs of First War of Independence, setting up of a museum in Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra, construction of parks named after martyrs in those villages which are associated with First War of Independence and construction or remodelling of 163 bridges by the end of 2008. He said land had been allotted at concessional rates to set up dispensaries for ex-Servicemen in eight districts of the State and land would also be allotted in four more districts in the next two months. Announcing schemes for Ambala district, Mr. Hooda said a Rs. 200-crore sewerage plan was being formulated and work to construct another bridge on river Tangri would commence in the next two months. Another bridge would be constructed on Mullana-Jharu-Naraingarh road, over the Markanda river. A Rs. 300-crore scheme to improve depleting water table in Ambala district had been forwarded to the Central Government for its approval. He asserted that efforts were on to get due share of Haryana in Ravi Beas waters through the Sutlej-Yamuna Link canal. Meanwhile, Finance and Labour Minister Birender Singh announced in Panipat that the State Labour Department had launched a social security scheme, “Jan Shri Bima Yojana”, in the interest of the workers engaged in the building and other construction activities. Mr. Birender Singh said the scheme not only ensured family protection of the members in case of their untimely death but also helped in the education of their children. Meaenwhile, Minister of State for Toursim and Forests Kiran Choudhary announced in Gurgaon that “Mahila Shakti Sadans” would be set up in all the villages to empower the womenfolk.
