Rs. 920 crore sanctioned for modernisation of Bhadra canals


DAVANGERE: S.A. Ravindranath, Minister for Sugar and Davangere district in-charge, has stressed the need to make use of human capital available in the country for national development.

Unfurling the National Flag at the district stadium here on Wednesday to mark 60 years of independence, Mr. Ravindranath said the country, particularly Karnataka, which had produced great minds in the field of software engineering and medicine, should make use of the potential of the youth by providing them with adequate employment opportunities.

Loans disbursed

Mr. Ravindranath, who highlighted the achievements of the coalition Government, said that in Davangere alone, 30,430 farmers had been given loans totalling Rs. 49.35 crore (at a nominal interest rate of 4 per cent), as against the target of Rs. 108 crore to be disbursed to 43,200 farmers.

Interest waived

He also said that farm loans totalling Rs. 74.49 crore and interest amounting to Rs.3.71 crore had been waived.

The Government had released Rs. 6,990 lakh to the Public Works Department for the construction of 393 km of roads in the district.

Over 3,898 women’s self-help groups were given financial assistance of Rs. 194 lakh.

The Government had deposited Rs. 690 lakh in the name of 6,359 girls under the Bhagyalakshmi scheme in the district in the past one year.

Free electricity

Under the Rajiv Gandhi Rural Electrification Scheme, 42,978 poor families were identified and given free electricity, the Minister said and added that the district administration had spent over Rs. 12 crore to tackle the drought situation.

Similarly, the district administration was working hard to ensure successful rehabilitation of those who had lost their houses in the recent heavy rain.

Bhadra canals

Modernisation work on the Bhadra canals had been taken up for the first time after its construction 43 years ago, he said and added that the coalition Government had sanctioned Rs. 920 crore for the purpose.

The Government had released Rs. 142 crore to fill 22 tanks with river water, he said adding that Rs. 12 crore had been sanctioned for the construction of the Deputy Commissioner office as well as district offices.

President of the Davangere Zilla Panchayat H.B. Manjappa, vice-president Nagarathnamma, Deputy Commissioner M.B. Dyaberi and Inspector-General of Police Narayana Rao were present on the occasion. Children from different schools performed a dance programme and participated in various cultural activities.

They, along with the police, NCC, Home Guards and Scouts and Guides took part in the march past at the stadium.
