Chitradurga: Chitradurga district in-Charge and Education Minister Basavaraj S. Horatti has promised to visit the district within a fortnight to asses the drought situation.

Speaking to presspersons after participating in the 60th Independence Day programme here on Wednesday, he said that he has asked the district administration to prepare a report of crop loss. He said that a few parts of the district have incurred loss owing to excess rain. To provide relief, Deputy Commissioner Amlan Aditya Biswas has sought Rs. 3 crore.

Replying to the compliant, he said that his irregular visits to the district should not be treated seriously, as despite his busy schedules, he was in regular contact with the district administration to ensure that development works were taken up.

He, however, admitted to writing a letter to Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy urging him to relieve him from the post of in-charge Minister. “As I am shouldering many responsibilities, I have requested the Chief Minister to relieve me from the post as I am not fully doing justice to my post,” he said.

He said he had recommended the name of Minister for Housing D.T. Jaikumar to replace him but the Chief Minister had not agreed to it.

Commitment

Mr. Horatti has reiterated the commitment of the Karnataka Development Front (KDF) Government to the welfare of all sections of society. Addressing a gathering after unfurling the National Flag to celebrate the 60th year of Indian Independence at Veera Vanitha Vanake Vobbavva Stadium here on Wednesday, he highlighted the achievements of the Government.

He said the Government, in order to help landless farmers, had launched a special scheme called “Namma Bhoomi, Namma Thota”.

Under this scheme, 20 per cent of landless labourers workers from each gram panchayat would be given five guntas of dry land or 2.5 guntas of irrigated land.

The celebrations began with the unfurling of the tri-colour by Mr. Horatti who later received a guard of honour from Police, NCC, NSS and schoolchildren amid music by the Police Band.

The main attraction of the two-hour long programme was an eye-catching performance by schoolchildren who wore fascinating attires especially designed for the day.
