Culturals portray progress in 60 years

Tiruvannamalai Collector unfurls the National Flag



Guard of honour: Tiruvannamalai Collector Satyabrata Sahoo reviews a guard of honour at the 60th Independence Day celebrations in Tiruvannamalai on Wednesday.

TIRUVANNAMALAI: A glittering cultural performance, which portrayed development in the last 60 years of Independence and the country’s past and present, was the highlight of the 60th Independence Day celebrations held here on Wednesday for the first time at the district stadium.

District Collector Satyabrata Sahoo unfurled the National Flag and took guard of honour from the police, home guards and National Cadet Corps.

The Collector honoured freedom fighters, and distributed the welfare schemes to beneficiaries under various heads.

House and land pattas were distributed through the Revenue Department to 60 beneficiaries at a cost of Rs.2.24 lakh.

District Superintendent of Police V. Balakrishnan was present. The Collector handed over appreciation letters, medals and certificates to the police personnel, Home Guards, Government officials and ex-servicemen in recognition of their performance. The Fire Services personnel displayed a lively show and exhibited their skills.

The Collector witnessed a scintillating cultural performance by over 640 students from various schools in the district. Rengammal Memorial School for the Deaf and Dumb bagged the first prize for their performance in the cultural event.

Gandhi Nagar Matriculation Higher Secondary School and Mount Saint Joseph Matriculation Higher Secondary School bagged the second and third prizes respectively.

The Collector gave away financial assistance to the widows and the aged. Four self-help groups got a revolving fund of Rs.16, 000 distributed through the District Rural Development Agency. The Collector also handed over house pattas to 22 beneficiaries from the Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Department.

Later, the Collector participated at the “sammapandhi bojanam” held at Arulmigu Arunachaleswara temple.

Tiruvannamalai MLA K. Pitchandi and officials from the Hindu Religious Endowment Board were present.
