Free colour television scheme soon: Rangasamy

PUDUCHERRY: In his Independence Day address, Chief Minister N. Rangasamy has assured that his Government will soon implement free colour television scheme as promised in the election manifesto.

Speaking after hoisting the National Flag in the Indira Gandhi Sports complex in Upplam, the Chief Minister said the Government was taking steps to implement the scheme this financial year.

Listing out the welfare measures implemented by the Government, he said the scheme to give free LPG cylinders and gas stove for the BPL families had already started. So far 12,500 families were benefited, and the scheme would be continued.

Highlighting various schemes adopted in the health sector, the Chief Minister said that at present the per capita medical expenditure stood at Rs.1,050, compared to Rs.576 six years ago.

The work on establishing the medical college at a cost of Rs.300 crore was fast progressing. So was the case with the women and child hospital constructed at a cost of Rs.47 crore. Both the institutions would be of international standards, he noted.

The Chief Minister said the Government was in the process of finalising a welfare package for agricultural labourers. As a first step, a welfare board for the labourers was constituted recently. A survey was conducted to identify the number of farm labourers in the Union Territory. During the XI Five Year Plan, the Government would introduce natural farming and develop horticulture. Steps were being taken to preserve groundwater by constructing bed dams and lakes. Two lakes were recently developed in Karaikal and in the near future five more would be developed, he said.

The Government would give financial assistance to weavers to replace the old handloom equipments. On the infrastructure front, the Chief Minister said the Government was mulling to develop the Puducherry-Villupuram and Puducherry-Cuddalore road into a four way. A survey would be conducted to know the viability of the project, he noted. Mr. Rangasamy sought the cooperation of all political parties to implement various welfare measures. He inspected a guard of honour from the territorial police.

Mr. Rangasamy also presented President’s police medal for meritorious service to various officers. Those who received the awards included Kuppusamy Mohanraj, Superintendent of Police (Rural), Vannan Kandy Achuthan, inspector, J. Narasimman and Poongavanam Sundaramoorthy both sub-inspectors.

He also presented the Chief Minister’s police medal for best service to sub-inspectors to Dharmaraj Balraj, Levil Gurumurthy and A. Khaidhaazam, and police driver Murugusen Sundaram.

Mr. Rangasamy presented the Chief Secretary’s trophy for the best police station to T. R. Pattinam station in Karaikal.
