Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Wednesday celebrated Independence Day. Addressing a function after hoisting the national flag at the party headquarters here, NCP leader K. Karunakaran said at a time when many countries that gained independence along with India had fallen behind, the country had achieved progress by treading the path shown by Gandhiji, Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi. He said India had every right to celebrate its 60th anniversary of Independence as it had preserved democracy. NCP State president K. Muraleedharan said there was need for more clarity about the Indo-U.S. nuclear agreement in view of the apprehensions aired by various quarters even though it would put India on the path of progress. The KPCC celebrated Independence Day in the absence of its senior leaders. KPCC vice-president Mullapalli Ramachandran hoisted the national flag. KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala and Opposition Leader Oommen Chandy are away in Delhi in connection with the launch of Jai Hind television channel.
