Tricolour flies upside down at Calicut University

Staff Reporter

MALAPPURAM: Calicut University authorities goofed up the 60th anniversary of Independence Day celebrations on Wednesday by hoisting the national flag upside down. Police registered a case against the university authorities for insulting the Tricolour.

The faux pas occurred when Vice-Chancellor Anwar Jahan Zuberi hoisted the flag in front of the university administrative block at 8 a.m. Soon after the flag was hoisted, the university authorities lowered it when a professor pointed out that the Tricolour was fluttering upside down. Prof. Zuberi hoisted the flag again correctly.

Students under the banner of the Kerala Students Union (KSU) took out a protest against the Vice-Chancellor for insulting the Tricolour. They staged a sit-in in front of the Vice-Chancellor’s residence and filed a complaint with the police.

Prof. Zuberi held talks with the KSU students and assured them that action would be taken against those responsible for the goof-up. She tendered an apology for the mistake.

Prof. Zuberi said that it was an inadvertent mistake, and that there was no intention to dishonour the National Flag. She said the security officer had been asked to submit a report about the incident.

On the basis of the KSU complaint, the police registered a case against the university authorities under Section II of the Prevention of Insult to National Honour Act 1971. eanwhile, the Muslim Youth League appealed to Governor R.L. Bhatia to initiate action against the Registrar for insulting the national flag. In a memorandum faxed to the Governor, who is also Chancellor of the university, Muslim Youth League zonal secretary P.M. Mohammed Ali Babu demanded that Calicut University Registrar be held responsible for disrespecting the flag and that appropriate action taken against him.
