Planting of 6,000 saplings begins

For a green village: Tirupur MLA C. Govindasamy planting a sapling at Mangalam marking the plantation of 6,000 saplings by Aandipalayam Green Park Promotion Trust and Rotary Club of Tirupur West on Wednesday. —

TIRUPUR: Planting of 6,000 saplings began at Mangalam village near here as part of the 60th year of Independence Day celebrations by Aandipalayam Green Park Promotion Trust and Rotary Club of Tirupur West on Wednesday.

Coimbatore MP K. Subbarayan hoisted the tricolour while Tirupur MLA C. Govindasamy planted the first sapling. Rotary Club of Tirupur West president A.P. Velusamy presided over the function.

K. Rajendran, Inspector General of Police, West Zone, dedicated the tractor that was bought for watering the saplings for the next three years. Coimbatore Superintendent of Police G. Karthikeyan, District Rotary Governor (Elect) E.K. Sagadevan, State Planning Commission member V. Muthuramalingam and panchayat president Balamani Subramanian and others participated. G. Sivanandham, president of Makkal Pasumai Iyakkam, welcomed the gathering.

AGPPT president R. Sivaram said 50 saplings were planted on the first day and pits were dug up for the remaining.

After getting one or two rains, the planting of saplings would be speeded up. All the 6,000 saplings would be planted by November.

Mr. Sivaram said all service organisations of the village joined the movement. AGPPT would spend Rs. 18 lakh in the next three years for watering the saplings.

Two tractors were purchased for this purpose and four workers would be employed for watering.
