DAVANGERE: The Government has decided to extend the midday meal and bicycle distribution schemes for girl students to unaided schools in the State, keeping in mind that poor children of these schools do not feel discriminated against, Minister for Education Basavaraj Horatti has said. He was participating in a function held to felicitate schools that secured 100 per cent results in the SSLC examination, here on Tuesday. Mr. Horatti said the Government had sent a proposal to the Finance Department in this regard. Both the schemes would be implemented in unaided schools soon after getting the concurrence of the Finance Department, he said. It had also been decided to provide aid to unaided schools that started functioning between 1987 and 1992. More than 1,309 primary and 667 high schools and 102 PU colleges would get aid from this year, he said. Mr. Horatti said that he had also decided to set up an office of the Assistant Education Officer at the gram panchayat level. Rural service
Teachers with merit were being posted to urban areas and this was affecting the quality of education in rural areas. In order to provide quality education to rural children, the Government had decided to make it compulsory for all new teachers to serve in rural areas for a certain period, he said. The Minister said that the Government had created a record by recruiting over 31,400 teachers in the past 20 months and of those, 18,000 were recruited in the past one year. An amount of Rs. 285 crore had been released to improve infrastructure in schools and Rs. 25 crore to repair school buildings. The Minister expressed satisfaction over the performance of government schools. Davangere district in-charge Minister S.A. Ravindranath and Kumaranaika, Commissioner of the Education Department, spoke on the occasion. P.T. Parameshwar Naika, Congress MLA from Harpanahalli, in his speech, suggested to the Minister to allow teacher couples to work at the same place. H.S. Shivashankar, MLC, lauded the work done by the Education Minister.
