NEYVELI: Neyveli Lignite Corporation is saddled with an ageing thermal power station that requires replacement. The Thermal Power Station-I has already got its life extended by 15 years, and another extension for the four-decade-old unit is not viable, according to S. Jayaraman, Chairman-cum-Managing Director of the NLC.
He was delivering the Independence Day speech at the Bharathi Stadium here on Wednesday. He said the original life span of the 600-MW thermal power station was 25 years, and through the Life Extension Programme, it was given another lease of life for 15 years, but it could not be stretched any further.
Therefore, Mr. Jayaraman said replacement of TPS-I with high capacity unit was under consideration. As for the ongoing projects, he said the site activities on expansion of Mine-II and TPS-II, and, the Barsingsar project had picked up momentum.
The Public Investment Board had cleared the NLC proposal for a 1,000 MW power plant at Tuticorin for which the Centre’s approval was awaited.
