High Court Bench raps Melur teacher training college

Staff Reporter

MADURAI: The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has pulled up a teacher training college at Melur near here for admitting a 35-year-old unqualified woman candidate to the Bachelor of Education course.

Justice K. Chandru directed the institution, affiliated to Madurai Kamaraj University, to repay Rs.30,000 collected towards course fee from the petitioner in 2005 with six per cent interest.

The college was also ordered to return the original certificates surrendered by the candidate during admission.

The petitioner said that she had joined the college based on a Bachelor of Arts degree obtained under open university system after completing her X standard. But when she was about to sit for the examination in the following year, the university refused to issue the hall ticket because the petitioner had not passed Plus Two examinations in the regular stream.

Agreeing with the stand taken by the university, the Judge said that the court could not interfere in such matters and direct the varsity to relax the rules for the sake of the petitioner.

“However, the dismissal of this writ petition will not allow the third respondent (college) to escape from their responsibility of being found fault with…Because of their action, the petitioner was forced to lose her precious time and put plausible consideration under the fond hope she can do her B. Ed. course,” the Judge said.
