Excellent supplement

“Independent India at 60” is a well- conceived supplement by The Hindu. The readers will have to spend a lot of time to appreciate the numerous valuable articles. I would like to congratulate the team responsible f or the project. The front page itself has a masterpiece from the brush of M.F. Husain.

Every topic in the issue is exemplary. My personal favourites are “Newspaper futures: India and the World” by N. Ram, “Six decades of parliamentary democracy” by Somnath Chatterjee, “A question of the right balance” by Fali S. Nariman, “Indian civil services on the comeback trail” by B.S. Raghavan, “Making every drop of water count” by Ramaswamy R. Iyer, and “Why the South attracts” by V. Jayanth.

M.K. Rangarajan,

Thank you for a beautiful supplement to mark the 60th anniversary of India’s Independence. All the old articles transported us back to the good old days. I still have the 50th Independence Day supplement of The Hindu.

V.V.V. Satyanarayana,

Your Independence Day specials have always been worthy keepsakes. I am sure the young generation will greatly benefit from the present supplement too.

The editorials and articles from the archives of The Hindu made excellent reading.

The editorial, “The Universal Man,” published after Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination made me cry.

Nehru’s speech, “Tryst with Destiny,” is inspiring even today. Jack Fingleton’s article on Ranjitsinhji is very informative. In all, the supplement is a history book by itself.

That the entire two-part supplement was made available for the regular price speaks well of the tradition of the newspaper. The centre-page collection of cartoons spread over six decades is a feast for the eyes.

The rare old photographs kindled memories of our freedom struggle and the personalities behind it. A fitting tribute to the nation.

P. Andrew Valsan,

Nagercoil

Both the sections — “From the archives of The Hindu” and the essays — are treasures and I request you to publish them in a book form. Personally, I am happy to read all these as I was born in 1947.

K.H. Krishnan,

Shencottah

All the articles are excellent and worth preserving. As an artiste I appreciate Chitravina N. Ravikiran’s views on the Carnatic music scene.

M.F. Husain’s sketch on the front page is wonderful.

V.P. Dhananjayan,

Chennai
