Reliance opens mega retail outlet

Spread over 1.65 lakh sq. ft., it offers a range of products

AHMEDABAD: Reliance Retail Limited on Wednesday launched the country’s first ‘Reliance Mart’ here on the occasion of the Independence Day. The Mart, third mega retail outlet of Reliance after ‘Reliance Fresh’ and ‘Reliance Digital,’ experienced a heavy rush of shoppers on the opening day.

Also claimed to be the country’s largest hypermarket, the Reliance Mart at the Iskon Mall here is spread over 1.65 lakh sq. ft., carrying a range of over 95,000 products starting from daily necessities like grocery, fruits and vegetables to home care products, apparels, consumer durables and even automotive accessories.

“The concept is to develop it as a ‘solution centre’ where anyone can come to our Mart and get anything under one roof and at cheaper or equivalent prices but with much better quality products,” Reliance Retail, India head, Raghu Pillai, said. It will be perhaps for the first time that a shopping mall would provide services like tailoring, shoe and watch repair, photographic studio and even laundry services, besides fresh bakery, ice creams and such other eatables that most other shopping centres provide. Reliance Retail had plans to open its next Mart in Jamnagar, also in Gujarat, before going to the South to start similar outlets in Hyderabad, Chennai, Bangalore and other major centres, Mr. Pillai said. In Kolkata, he said, despite reported objections from a section of the ruling CPM cadres, it would open branches of ‘Reliance Fresh,’ supplying grocery and fresh fruits and vegetables.
