‘Mallakamba’ by schoolchildren was special attraction of I-Day celebrations
CHIKMAGALUR: D.H. Shankaramurthy, Minister for Higher Education and district in charge, appealed to the people of the country to unite in fighting internal and external evil forces. Unfurling the national flag and taking the salute on the occasion of Independence Day celebrations at the district playground here on Wednesday, Mr. Shankaramurthy stressed the need to preserve the unique culture and heritage of the country. He observed that the celebrations assumed additional importance this year as it marked the 150th anniversary of the freedom movement, the birth centenary of freedom fighter Bhagat Singh and the centenary of “Vande mataram” being accepted as National Song. Giving details of the progress achieved by the coalition Government during the last 18 months, the Minister said that starting 182 degree colleges during this period was a national record. He inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for various development works to the extent of Rs. 6.1 crore. V. Chandrashekar, Deputy Commissioner of Chikmagalur district; Vipul Kumar, Superintendent of Police; C.T. Ravi, MLA; Belli Prakash, president of zilla panchayat; and K. Sundar Naik, chief executive officer of zilla panchayat, were present. “Mallakamba”, a rural sport in which gymnastics is performed on a pole anointed with oil, by schoolchildren from Dharwad was the special attraction of the day. Speaking to presspersons Mr. Shankaramurthy reiterated that B.S. Yediyurappa would become the next Chief Minister as agreed upon. He denied that Mr. Yediyurappa had gone to New Delhi to prevail upon senior leaders of the party to negotiate with former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda over the transfer of power. He said the Deputy Chief Minister was holding discussions on strengthening the party cadre for the forthcoming civic elections.
