Work on second dam to begin soon

Special Correspondent

Corporation is yet to submit the design to Government for approval: Minister

The project is estimated to cost Rs. 40 crore

Road development work to be taken up shortly

MANGALORE: Work on the second vented dam across the Nethravati at Thumbay near Mangalore should begin by the first week of December 2007, said district in-charge Minister B. Nagaraja Shetty here on Wednesday.

At a meeting held to review the development schemes being implemented by Mangalore City Corporation, Mr. Shetty directed officials to keep the relevant papers ready for submitting to the Government. Mr. Shetty, who expressed dismay about the slow progress on the second vented dam, said the Government had already cleared the Rs. 40-crore project, but the design of the dam had not been submitted by the corporation.

At a time when Mangalore was poised for higher growth, the city should not be faced with a water shortage.

Details given

Giving details, the commissioner of the corporation said two designs were ready with them but there were some cost differences. The construction of the dam would take not less than two years, the commissioner said.

Mr. Shetty wanted the concreting of the Circuit House-Airport Road stretch, up to Malavoor Bridge, to be completed quickly. This would speed up the development of the second stage of the international airport.

The Government would spend Rs. 200 crore on the second stage work, including a parallel runway and other facilities. On the development of other roads, Mr. Shetty said nine arterial roads would be developed at a cost of Rs. 56 crore, which included Bejai Church to Basaveshwara Ciricle in Kadri (four-lane concrete), Kulur-Kavoor Main Road ( four-lane concrete), KSRTC Junction to Kavoor Junction (four-lane bituminous tarmac), Pandeshwara level-crossing to Morgan’s Gate and Morgan’s Gate to Saint Rita’s School (two-way bituminous tarmac), Bunts Hostel to PVS Circle (concrete road) and PVS Circle to Navbharath Circle (four-lane paver finished road), Hampankatta signal to U.P. Mallya Road (four-lane concrete), Kankanady Karavali Circle to Father Muller Circle (four-lane concrete), Court ward Bauta Gudda to Tagore Park to Ambedkar Circle (four-lane concrete), and Nanthoor Circle to Kadri Pump House (four-lane concrete) are the main projects to be taken up immediately.

Administrator of the corporation and Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kananda M. Maheshwara Rao said the corporation was planning to build new structures for the seven markets in the city including the Central Market.
