KOCHI: Harithatheeram (green coast), a project conceived jointly by the Forest and Fisheries departments with people’s participation, will take off in the district on Thursday. Minister for Public Works T.U. Kuruvilla will inaugurate the district-level programmes of the project at Kuzhupilly, near here. Tree saplings to be planted in coastal households as part of the project will also be distributed on the occasion. The project aims at creating a bio-shield throughout the State’s coastal regions to ensure their development and the welfare and protection of the people residing there. At present sea walls are being constructed for the protection of the coastal regions and the people. The Harithatheeram project proposes to plants trees at a certain distance from the coast thus providing a bio-shield protecting coastal population from tsunami, sea erosion, etc.
