Kasturba Hospital concedes demands

Staff Correspondent

Manipal: Manipal University trustee T. Ashok Pai said on Wednesday that the three demands of the people protesting over the death of John Sebastian Jathana owing to alleged negligence of doctors at Kasturba Hospital had been met.

John Jathana, an electrician at Kasturba Medical College, was injured in an accident on the night of August 12. He died on August 13 at the hospital. His brother, Gladson Jathana, had complained of negligence in John’s treatment sparking a protest on August 13 and 14.

Speaking to presspersons here, Mr. Pai said it had been decided to provide doctors of the patients’ choice to treat them at the hospital. This decision had been implemented from August 14. The three accused of alleged negligence in treating John Jathana had been asked to proceed on leave and an inquiry had been initiated. Mr. Pai said the personnel of Manipal University were covered under a group insurance. If any of them died while on duty, their kin was entitled to compensation of Rs. 10 lakh.
