TAMBARAM: Residents of Peerkankaranai, near Tambaram, have urged the State Government to acquire vacant and poromboke land for the Tambaram Eastern Bypass project instead of land in residential localities. On Monday, two days after State Highways Department officials marked certain areas to be acquired for the project, residents and office-bearers of civic groups in Peerkankaranai appealed to Tambaram MLA S.R.Raja to ensure that developed areas were not taken for the project. The Tambaram Eastern Bypass is a 150-metre-wide, 7.5-kilometre-long road connecting Rajakilpakkam near Tambaram on Velachery Main Road and Peerkankaranai on Grand Southern Trunk Road. The Bypass would pass through Madambakkam, Mappedu, Agaram Then, Tiruvanchery and Nedunkundram among other villages. Work on identifying land, for acquisition, for the project was speeded up last week. On Saturday, a team of officials conducted a survey of the land that had to be acquired between Mappedu and Sadanandapuram villages. Once completed, it is expected to bring immense relief to motorists, apart from easing congestion on GST Road and Velachery Main Road. Land required for one portion of the project has already been identified and Rs.1 crore sanctioned for this. The project would be executed under the Chennai Metropolitan Development Programme. The residents, led by Peerkankaranai Kamaraja Nagar Welfare Association secretary K.R.Ramasamy conveyed their fears about their houses being demolished, after land acquisition, to Mr. Raja. On the southern side of the existing road, vacant and poromboke land was available and instead of using this, the government had set its eyes on developed areas on the northern side, which was unfair, they said.
