SRIVILLIPUTTUR: Thousands of devotees participated in the annual Adi Pooram car festival of the Andal Temple here on Wednesday.
After special pujas, the presiding deities, Andal and Rengamannar, were brought to the decorated car at 7.15 a.m. Devotees formed a beeline to have darshan of the deities till the car started rolling at 9.15 a.m.
Industrialist, P.R. Ramasubramaneya Rajha, Srivilliputtur MLA, T. Ramasamy, Sivakasi Revenue Divisional Officer, B. Ganesan, and the Chairman, Board of Trustees, T.R. Dinakaran, were among those who were present.
Though the crowd was unusually less on account of Independence Day celebrations in the morning when the car started from the East Car Street, it kept swelling as it moved on.
Men, women and children eagerly participated in pulling the car, cheered by the chanting of “Govinda,” “Govinda” over the public address system.
Devotees also performed “kolattam” attracting the crowds that had turned up from various places of the southern districts.
They also recited versus from Nalayira Divya Prabandam.
Despite the atmospheric temperature soaring as the day progressed, devotees thronged the Car Streets.
