KSCA XI emerges champion

Bangalore: Host KSCA XI emerged champion in the KSCA all-India invitation cricket tournament that concluded at the Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Wednesday. In the final, KSCA XI defeated KSCA President’s XI by 18 runs.

On the second and final day, requiring 266 in 100 overs for a trophy triumph, KSCA President’s XI was bowled out for 247 in 84.4 overs with skipper Sudhindra Shinde (86) waging a lone battle.

The chase stumbled in the beginning as KSCA President’s XI suffered a twin-strike by seamer Vinay Kumar, who dismissed opener Devraj Patil and Ganesh Satish. At 16 for two, Shinde walked in and shared a 54-run third-wicket partnership with Rajshekar Shanbal (31) to briefly revive the innings. However, left-arm spinner Vinoo Prasad (five for 38) ruffled Shanbal’s pads and off-spinner C. Raghu scuttled Sunil Raju’s tenure at the crease.

A period of fielding brilliance then ensured that KSCA XI was on course to the victor’s podium. Vinoo Prasad swivelled in his follow-through and caught a stinging lofted drive by Amit Verma and later Shinde too succumbed as he slammed Vinoo and found an air-borne Vinay Kumar plucking an overhead catch at mid-off to ruin the KSCA President’s XI hopes.

Leg-spin legend B.S. Chandrasekhar and the KSCA assistant secretary Sudhakar Rao graced the prize-distribution function. KSCA XI skipper Yere Goud was adjudged the ‘Man of the final.’

The scores:

KSCA XI 265 for nine in 100 overs bt KSCA President’s XI 247 in 84.4 overs (Sudhindra Shinde 86, Vinoo Prasad five for 38). — Principal Correspondent
