Eroor-Champakkara boat race to be held today

Only boat race in Ernakulam district in which snake-boats participate

KOCHI: This year’s Eroor-Champakkara boat race will be held on the Champakkara backwaters at 1.30 p.m. on Friday. The traditional Veppu, Chundan and Odi boats will be part of the festiviti es.

The programme is being jointly organised by Eroor-Perikkad Boat Club, Corporation of Cochin, Thripunithura Municipality and Maradu grama panchayat.

This is the only boat race in the Ernakulam district in which Chundan boats participate. Payippad Chundan, a hat-trick Nehru Trophy winner, Karichal that came second in Nehru Trophy race and Sreeganesh, which finished third, will be among the participants.

Besides, famous Chundan boats, including Ayaparampil Valiyadiwanji and Champakkulam Cheruthana, will participate, said a communication from the organisers of the show.

Display of art forms

Traditional art forms such as Theyyam, Kathakali, Kavadiyattam, Thiruvathirakali, Pulikali and Shinkarimelam will add flair to the boat race and the festivities.

Minister for Health P. K. Sreemathi will inaugurate the boat race and Minister for Fisheries S. Sarma will distribute the prizes to the winners.

C. K. Manishankar, Deputy Mayor of the Corporation, will preside. K. Babu, MLA; chairman of Thripunithura Municipality Ranjini Suresh; and Maradu panchayat president K. A. Devassy are among those who will participate.

District Collector A. P. M. Mohammed Hanish will flag off the festivities.

C. M. Dinesh Mani, Palluruthy MLA, will hoist the flag and Mayor of the Corporation Mercy Williams will participate in the flag-hoisting programme.

Album release

The District Collector had earlier released an audio album on the Champakkara Boat Race. It was prepared by the organising committee of the Boat Race.
