The American Center is staging a documentary play based on the Civil Rights movement in the United States this Friday. Titled “My Soul is a Witness” and performed by the Chicago-based theatre group “Pegasus Players”, the drama is being staged to celebrate the 60th anniversary of India’s Independence as it is considered that the struggle for Civil Rights was based on the Gandhian idea of “satyagraha” or non-violent resistance. The play highlights how these tools of social reform brought about sweeping changes in the status of minorities living in the United States. It also provides a rousing look at people and events that are still relevant and delivers the universal message of social equality and justice. Peter Eisenhauer, First Secretary of Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi, says: “The American Center does not hesitate to present a frank depiction of difficult social issues in the U.S. As democracies we have the strength to acknowledge that we are not perfect and that we have to keep working to live up to our values.” Pegasus Players is a not-for-profit theatre company located in Chicago’s uptown area and its mission is to produce quality artistic work and provide exemplary theatre. Passes for the show are available with the American Center. – Kunal Diwan
