MALAPPURAM: The protest against Calicut University authorities for the faux pas they committed by hoisting the Tricolour upside down on Independence Day snowballed into a mass agitation with the Muslim Youth League (MYL) activists courting arrest after they laid a siege to the Vice-Chancellor’s office on Thursday. Calicut University on Thursday served show-cause notice to three security personnel for the incident. Security superintendent S. Prakash, sergeant Balakrishnan, and guard P. Ramdas were asked to explain how the goof-up took place. The Youth League protesters accused Vice-Chancellor Anwar Jahan Zuberi of trying to shift the blame to the security personnel. The Youth League on Thursday complained to President Pratibha Patil and Vice-President Hamid Ansari seeking action against the university authorities for “insulting the national flag.” District Youth League president P.A. Salam said in a statement here that the Independence Day goof-up reflected the flippant attitude of the university authorities to all serious matters. Meanwhile, the university appointed a two-member commission to inquire into the flag-hoisting incident. Syndicate member K.P. Janardhanan and the former Head of Commerce Department K.P. Muraleedharan will submit their report in five days.
