Kozhikode: Education Minister M.A. Baby has said that awards can be accepted when they are wanted the most and rejected when they are not needed. Speaking after distributing the awards instituted by the State Institute of Languages here on Thursday, Mr.Baby said that when awards were in plenty and ineligible persons sat in judgement for selecting the winners, it was only right to reject them. However, awards also served the purpose of bringing to the limelight the talented people. Hence, awards had a symbolic attachment. It also bestowed a lot of responsibilities, the Minister said. The Minister gave away the Vaikom Mohammed Basheer award to Raghavan Atholi for his novel Chorapparisha m. M.P. Sadasivan received the N.P.Kumaran award for translation. R.V.M. Divakaran received the award for criticism. Shibu Muhammed and Yacob Thomas received the awards for the talent below 40 years of age. P.K. Pokker, director, State Institute of Languages, presided. Later, a debate on ‘What is happening to Malayali and Malayalam?’ was held. M.M. Basheer, K.E.N. Kunhahammed, T.P. Rajeevan, N. Madhavankutty and P.K. Parakkadavu were among those who spoke at the debate.
