Government to help sugar factories clear arrears

Three factories in Bidar owe farmers Rs. 34 crore,

says Minister


Bidar: The three cooperative sugar factories in Bidar district owe Rs. 34 crore to farmers. The factory managements have agreed to make the payments in a time-bound manner, Agriculture Minister Bandeppa Kashempur has said.

He was addressing a meeting of representatives of factory managements and farmers’ associations and district officials here on Thursday.

“Payment of arrears has been pending for over a year. The Government will do all it can to help farmers.

We are also willing to help the factories settle the arrears. I will brief Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy on the issue,” Mr. Kashempur said.

Officials of the Naranja Sahakari Sakkare Karakhane told the Minister that the factory had paid the farmers around Rs. 30 crore, and the arrears amounted to Rs. 19.58 crore. “We are trying to export sugar so that the arrears are settled before September-end,” the officials said.

Officials of the Mahatma Gandhi Sahakari Sakkare Karakhane said that Rs. 25.58 crore had been paid to farmers till now.

Arrears of Rs. 6.15 crore would be settled on September 10, they said.

The Bidar Sahakari Sakkare Karakhane had paid Rs. 36 crore to farmers.

Of the Rs 14.75 crore arrears, Rs. 6 crore would be paid before the end of the month and the rest settled within the first week of September, its chairman Ishwar Khandre said.

Deputy Commissioner Munish Moudgil and farmers association leaders were present at the meeting.
