Rs.76 lakh allotted to construct residential schools for dropouts

Rs.36.37 lakh sanctioned for compulsory education in Tiruvannamalai district

TIRUVANNAMALAI: The Tamil Nadu Government has allotted Rs.75.71 under the Sarva Siksha Abhyan (SSA) (Education For All) for the construction of residential schools for dropouts in the district, according to E.V. Velu, Food Minister.

Speaking at the function organised in connection with the inauguration of additional school buildings and the distribution of colour television (CTV) sets at Varaghur in Thandrambut on Thursday, Mr. Velu said that Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had allotted crores of rupees for education, and called upon the students to make use of the facilities.

Additional school buildings under the MPs Local Area Development Scheme and an additional building housing three classrooms under the SSA had been constructed at a cost of Rs.6.45 lakh in the Government school in Varaghur.

Construction of school buildings and other works had been undertaken under the SSA at a cost of Rs.6.16 crore in the district last year.

A sum of Rs.36.37 lakh had been allotted to the district for implementing various schemes aimed at ensuring and imparting compulsory education to all children in the age group of four to 14 years under the SSA. Ten elementary schools and eight middle schools had been upgraded.

The Minister said that out of the 90,000 coulur TVs allotted to the district for distribution to poor, 60,440 had so far been distributed. The remaining sets would be distributed before the end of September, he said.

Mr. Velu, who also inaugurated part-time fair price shops (FPS) in Nellikuppam in Thandrambut, said that the Government had relaxed the rules to set up FPS if there were a minimum of 150 cards for every 1.5 km, as against the earlier norm of a minimum of 200 cards. Six part-time FPS had been started in Thandrambut.

The prices of black gram, palmoil, rava and maida in the open market had come down after the Government introduced sale of these commodities under the public distribution system, he said.
