TIRUNELVELI: The Minister for Social Welfare, Poongothai Aladi Aruna, launched the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme (NREGP) at Gangaikondan about 20 km from here on Thursday. The programme is being implemented in 38 village panchayats under 19 panchayat unions in the district at a cost of Rs. 14 crore. The district administration has so far received Rs 4.5 crore for first phase work. Dr. Aruna said that the Government was keen on implementing development works in every backward district while improving the living standards of the poor. It had allocated Rs. 300 crore to establish an IT park at Gangaikondan, while including the village panchayat under NREGP. “Make use of this programme to improve your lifestyle and provide better education to your children ,” she said. The Collector, G. Prakash, said that rural development programmes, which could not be taken up under the MLA Constituency Development Fund or MP Local Area Development Fund, could be adopted under the NREGP with utmost transparency. Village pancahyat presidents would be the executive officers, who would implement the work with public participation. “As there is ceiling for allocation of funds, the public and the panchayat presidents should identify as many works as they can,” Mr. Prakash said. The Project Officer, District Rural Development Agency (DRDA), F. Abdul Razick, explained the salient features of the programme. A total of 975 people have expressed their willingness to work under this programme. The Minister distributed job cards to 300 beneficiaries, including 200 women. On her way back to Tirunelveli, Dr. Aruna interacted with 300 labourers engaged in desitling and strengthening of Duraiyoor tank on the Tirunelveli–Madurai National Highway. She disbursed financial assistance to the tune of Rs. 19.5 lakh to 130 beneficiaries under Moovaloor Ramamirtham Memorial Marriage Assistance Scheme.
