Government for CBI probe HIGH COURT ROUND-UP

Further investigation in custodial death case

KOCHI: The State Government on Thursday told the Kerala High Court that it did not have any objection to the case relating to the custodial death of Udayakumar being handed over to the CBI for further investigation.

Director-General of Prosecutions P.G. Thampi submitted before Justice V. Ramkumar that the Government was of the view that the case could be entrusted to the CBI for further investigation in the view of the sentiments expressed by the mother of the victim.

The DGP made these submissions when the petition filed by Prabhavati Amma, mother of Udayakumar, came up for hearing. The petition sought a CBI probe into the case. The court adjourned the hearing on the petition to August 21.

According to the petitioner, two police witnesses, T. Vijayakumar and C. Anilkumar, had turned hostile during trial. The petition also sought a directive to the State Government to remove the two police constables from service for retracting their earlier statements.

Disease prevention

The Government told the court that a cell at the State-level had been started to coordinate the preventive measures against the chikungunya and other diseases.

In a report submitted before the court, the Government said the cells had also been set up at the district level as well. The Government had spent Rs. 12 crore on combating the spread of the disease. A grant of Rs. 2 crore from the Union Government was also utilised for taking measures to fight the disease. Of the 25 lakh cases reported, 551 cases were diagnosed as chikungunya.

Petition filed

A shareholder of Rashtra Deepika has filed a petition before the court seeking to restrain the daily’s Managing Director Robin Mathew, Chairman, and Pharis Aboobacker from effecting transfer of shares at the general body meet ing of the daily to be held on August 20. The petition was filed by Josekutty Joseph. In his petition, he contended that even though shares worth Rs 4 crore were allotted to its chairman, the company had not received any amount.

‘Ensure supply of fuel’

A petition was filed seeking a directive to the oil companies to ensure uninterrupted supply of petroleum products in view of the strike called by the oil company officers from August 21.
