NEW DELHI: The Central Bureau of Investigation on Thursday submitted documents before a Sessions court here seeking to establish that Sushil Ansal and Gopal Ansal were at the helm of affairs in Uphaar cinema here when a power transformer was installed on its premises and licence was granted for it by the civic authorities. The Ansals have argued so far that they had ceased to be directors of the cinema hall and had no direct dealing in the installation of the power transformer or procuring its licence. Arguing before Additional Sessions Judge Mamata Sehgal, prosecution counsel Y.K. Saxena said the Ansals had issued three cheques, one for Rs.50 lakh, pertaining to financial dealings of Uphaar cinema within 81 days after the transformer was installed and licence for operating it had been granted. Counsel also submitted documents in this regard before the court. At least 59 people were killed in a fire that broke out in Uphaar cinema on June 13, 1997, when the film “Border” was being screened. The trial in the case has been going on for the past 10 years and the Delhi High Court has twice asked the trial court to complete the proceedings at the earliest.
