Handling capacity of major ports up

MANGALORE: The 12 major ports in India handled a total traffic of 463.84 million metric tonnes (MMT) during 2006-07 against a capacity of 456.20 million metric tonnes, Chairman of New Mangalore Port Trust P. Tamilvanan has said. Delivering the Independence Day address here on Wednesday, Mr. Tamilvanan said there were only five major ports in India at the time of Independence with a capacity of 20 MMT.

Recalling the selfless service and sacrifice made by the freedom fighters, Mr. Tamilvanan said the country had progressed a great deal in various sectors such as education, industry, agriculture, shipping, ports and so on in the last 60 years.

Performance

Thanking all concerned for their efforts in bringing the port to its present level, Mr. Tamilvanan said similar effort was needed at the national level as well.

He distributed cash awards and citation to students who secured highest marks in the SSLC examination held in April 2007 as well to the staff of Marine Department, who along with the Coast Guard were involved in rescuing a boatswain who fell overboard from M.T. Abul Kalam Azad recently.

Mr. Tamilvanan also distributed school bags to the students of Government Primary School, Thannirbhavi.

M. A. Bhaskarachar, Deputy Chairman, presented cash awards to NMPT staff and children of employees for winning laurels in the All India Major Ports sports and cultural competitions. Mr. Tamilvanan and senior officials of the port planted around 700 saplings to mark the occasion.

Earlier, personnel of CISF, Port Fire Service, NCC units, Scouts and Guides of NMP High School and Kendriya Vidyalaya took part in an impressive parade.
