The rain claimed 76 lives and 2,365 heads of cattle 13,167 people shifted to temporary relief camps
Belgaum: The incessant rain and floods in rivers in Belgaum division this year have so far claimed 76 lives, 2,365 heads of cattle and caused extensive damage to the standing crops, private and public property. The loss has been estimated at Rs. 374.68 crore, including Rs. 176.09 crore in Belgaum district. Standing crops in 67,877.33 hectares of land had been damaged in the division consisting of seven districts, including Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, Bagalkot, Bijapur and Uttara Kannada. According to official sources here on Thursday, as on August 14, 28 people were killed in Belgaum district. Ten persons each were killed in Bagalkot and Dharwad districts, seven in Bijapur, nine in Haveri, four in Gadag and eight in Uttara Kannada. In Bijapur, 1,611 heads of cattle were drowned and killed due to floods and lightening; 94 in Belgaum, 289 in Bagalkot, 77 in Dharwad, 55 in Gadag, 207 in Haveri and 32 in Karwar districts. As many as 13,167 people were affected and were shifted to temporary relief camps. In Haveri district, 7,486 people were affected, 1,500 in Uttara Kannada, 2,706 in Gadag, 1,375 in Bagalkot and 100 in Belgaum district. All the families have been temporarily housed in relief camps, where the local administrations have arranged food. Sources said agricultural crops had been damaged in 33,017 hectares of land in Haveri and 23,545 hectares in Belgaum district. As many as 40,303 pieces of private and public property had been damaged in varying degrees due to rain – Belgaum (6,278), Bagalkot (9,603), Bijapur (6,574), Dharwad (2,748), Gadag (4,008), Haveri (9,553) and Uttara Kannada (1,539). Overall losses to the public and private property, including losses to the standing crop was highest in Belgaum district (Rs. 1,76.09 crore) followed by Bagalkot (Rs. 60.47 crore), Uttara Kannada (Rs. 42.98 crore), Bijapur (Rs. 41.52 crore), Haveri (Rs. 37.50 crore), Gadag (Rs. 8.87 crore) and Dharwad (Rs.7.25 crore).
