dated August 17, 1957: Children’s play festival

Nearly 4,000 children from elementary schools in Madras city took part in a colourful play festival held on the Marina Grounds in Madras, marking the celebration of the centenary of the 1857 freedom struggle and the 10th year of India’s Independence. It was witnessed by a packed audience mainly of gaily-dressed children and their teachers. The Governor, Mr. A.J. John, and the Chief Minister, Mr. K. Kamaraj, were among the spectators.
