KOCHI: The district administration has submitted a fresh proposal identifying an additional three acres of land contiguous to that already identified at Edachira for the rehabilitation of families that will lose their land and houses for the proposed Smart City project, District Collector A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish said. Mr. Hanish expressed the hope of receiving formal approval from the Government for the proposal immediately. Under the proposal, the three acres would be released from the land earmarked for handing over to Tecom, promoters of Smart City. A rehabilitation package declared by the Government proposes to provide 6 cents free of cost to all the 61 families. Besides, those who will lose more than 20 cents will be entitled to purchase an additional five cents each at the price equivalent to what they are paid for the land taken from them. As per this package, a little over 6 acres are required for rehabilitating these families. Of this, 2.92 acres has been identified at Edachira and another three acres at Mapranam, near Chittethukara. However, the evictees have opposed the latter as the land is away from Edachira. Following this, the Collector made the proposal of releasing three acres from the land identified for Smart City, while giving Tecom the land at Mapranam.
