Letters to the Editor
The two-part supplement “Independent India at 60” was an invaluable Independence Day gift to the readers of The Hindu. The part reproduced from the archives with its four memorable editorials and report on Nehru 217;s awe-inspiring ‘Tryst with Destiny’ speech of August 15, 1947, apart from other articles and photographs, transported me back in time. The part containing essays on various subjects by learned authors and eminent persons is a priceless souvenir. The whole supplement is a collector’s item worth preserving. K.V. Ravindran, Payyanur
The contents help not only the younger generation but also those past middle age to visualise the trials and tribulations, and opportunities and challenges of an emerging sovereign nation. P.V.S. Subramanian, Bangalore
V.N. Gopal, Chennai
While all the pieces were enlightening, the one that moved was the editorial, “The Universal Man.” The piece is worth preserving for posterity, not only because it encapsulates the Mahatma’s vision but also for the sheer passion with which it has been written. Suresh Manoharan, Hyderabad
N.R.U.K. Kartha, Thiruvananthapuram
R. Srinivasan, Madurai
I wish the supplement had been published as a book. It would have helped me to preserve the copy and hand it over to my grandchildren as a legacy. Readers, I am sure, would not have minded paying for such a valuable work. S. Nallasivan, Tirunelveli
John S. Reddy, Hyderabad
Little known aspects of Independence were brought to light through the section reproduced from the archives. The various articles by eminent Indians provided a comprehensive evaluation of India’s accomplishments as well as hurdles that are yet to be overcome. U. Manju Nair, Thiruvananthapuram
The environmental concerns expressed by Ashish Kothari were particularly noteworthy. P. Jyothiradityan, Kollengode
