Collector’s item

The two-part supplement “Independent India at 60” was an invaluable Independence Day gift to the readers of The Hindu. The part reproduced from the archives with its four memorable editorials and report on Nehru 217;s awe-inspiring ‘Tryst with Destiny’ speech of August 15, 1947, apart from other articles and photographs, transported me back in time.

The part containing essays on various subjects by learned authors and eminent persons is a priceless souvenir. The whole supplement is a collector’s item worth preserving.

K.V. Ravindran,

It was a real pleasure going through the articles and essays. The 12-page section reproduced from the archives of The Hindu is a treasure to be preserved although it offers only a sample of ou r great national heritage.

The contents help not only the younger generation but also those past middle age to visualise the trials and tribulations, and opportunities and challenges of an emerging sovereign nation.

The supplement is a compendium of thought-provoking articles. My only regret is that it was in broadsheet. It would have been easier to preserve had it been brought out in the easy-to-read magazine format. May I add that the resolution passed by the citizens of Madras in 1919 that “public confidence in the policy of THE HINDU continues undiminished” holds good even today.

Thanks to the memorable supplement, those readers who were not born when the articles were published or were too young to savour them had the wonderful experience of being transported back in time.

While all the pieces were enlightening, the one that moved was the editorial, “The Universal Man.” The piece is worth preserving for posterity, not only because it encapsulates the Mahatma’s vision but also for the sheer passion with which it has been written.

The supplement provides an insight into our past. Our schools and colleges should preserve it for the younger generation so that it can appreciate our people’s struggle for independence.

The Hindu has done a commendable job in getting excellent articles from veterans in different fields. The young will benefit immensely from the comprehensive supplement.

The editorials “A Red-Letter Day” and “The Universal Man” were indeed moving.

I wish the supplement had been published as a book. It would have helped me to preserve the copy and hand it over to my grandchildren as a legacy. Readers, I am sure, would not have minded paying for such a valuable work.

The content is very informative, particularly for young readers like me. The articles infuse a sense of patriotism in us, which is the need of the hour. I hope The Hindu will continu e to make reading pleasurable and valuable.

Hats off for the effort. While the photographs were sober, the cartoons were amusing.

Little known aspects of Independence were brought to light through the section reproduced from the archives.

The various articles by eminent Indians provided a comprehensive evaluation of India’s accomplishments as well as hurdles that are yet to be overcome.

U. Manju Nair,

Thiruvananthapuram

Historic moments resurfaced through the pristine photographs and profound vignettes. The analyses of the post-Independence era by prominent political leaders and eminent scholars were informative.

The environmental concerns expressed by Ashish Kothari were particularly noteworthy.

P. Jyothiradityan,

Kollengode
