Medical camp for livestock held

Aimed at increasing the livestock population and milk production


Health condition of animals assessed

Deworming, pregnancy verification made


PUDUKOTTAI: A special medical camp for livestock under the ‘Kaalnadai Padhugappu Thittam’ was organised jointly by the Department of Animal Husbandry and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty Against Animals at Senayakudi village in Kunnandarkoil block in the district on Thursday.

A team of veterinary doctors from the Veterinary University Regional Research Centre, Pudukottai, and the Department of Animal Husbandry assessed the health condition of the animals.

The doctors administered vaccination and conducted deworming and castration and pregnancy verification for the cattle.

Mineral mixture packets to improve the reproductive health of the animals were provided through the Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA) funds. Over 2,700 animals underwent a check-up during the course of the camp lasting for over three hours.

Inaugurating the camp, Collector S.J. Chiru said there were over 12 lakh livestock in the district. The objective of the camp was to go the villages and provide treatment to cattle, sheep and goats and ensure that they were free from any diseases. It was also aimed at increasing the livestock population and milk production. Sixty-four camps had been conducted so far. Over 80,000 livestock benefited.

K. Subramania Pillai, Regional Joint Director, Animal Husbandry Department, Thanjavur, K. Ramakrishnan, Assistant Director, Animal Husbandry, Pudukottai, officials and local body representatives participated.

The Collector distributed prizes to owners of the best cattle.
