Panel’s suggestion on maternity benefits
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI: A parliamentary panel has recommended that maternity benefits be extended to women in the unorganised sector too. The Standing Committee on Labour, in a report on “The Maternity Benefit (Amendment) Bill, 2007” tabled in the Lok Sabha on Thursday, felt that the existing Act may be made applicable to cover women in the unorganised sector till legislation covering these women is drafted. The committee, while noting with distress the high maternal mortality rate, asked the Government to explore the possibility of creating a national corpus fund involving contribution from employees, Union and State Governments.
On maternity leave, the committee recommended an enhancement under the existing Act to at least 135 days as available to the Central employees.
