NOVEL INITIATIVE: A constable reading a letter issued by Police Commissioner in Chennai.

CHENNAI: Chennai Police Commissioner G. Nanchil Kumaran has urged all police personnel in the city to pay greater attention to maintenance of law and order and take measures to prevent crime and speedy action to solve the reported crimes.

A letter from him, a copy of which has been pasted at all the police stations, also asked the personnel to send in their suggestions to improve the functioning of the police.

The communication, said to be the first of its kind by any Commissioner to his team, was issued soon after Mr. Kumaran assumed office. He also sought suggestions from the personnel “regarding expectations from your Commissioner of Police.” While welcoming suggestions for the improvement of policing, he said the useful and feasible suggestions would be implemented.

Many in the city police hierarchy welcomed the communication and described it as a positive gesture for further improvement.

Some of the Assistant Commissioners and Inspectors of Police said it would motivate and encourage the personnel to present their views on sensitive issues without reservation.

After taking over as the Commissioner on August 2, Mr. Kumaran reviewed the various areas of functioning with his officers.

Talking to The Hindu, Mr. Kumaran said he firmly believed in getting information from the grass roots and the communication was an initiative in that direction.
