Renaming row

What is in a name? One might say like the Bard, but everything is in a name, aver political leaders.

Kicking off this debate is the recent Government decision to name Kukatpally Housing Board Colony after Rajiv Gandhi. Khairatabad MLA P. Janardhan Reddy justified the decision, as the colony itself, falling under his constituency, was sanctioned during the tenure of Chief Minister Kasu Brahmananda Reddy.

The construction commenced during the time of another Congress Chief Minister Marri Channa Reddy and while Indira Gandhi was at the nation’s helm.

The colony grew to its present stature thanks to Congress workers and leaders, who ensured it was provided with all basic amenities including good roads, drinking water etc. What more the colony was now in the vicinity of Hi-Tec City, that again was due to the pioneering initiative of Rajiv Gandhi to promote IT, he argued.

But those who disagree say KPHB is quite a well known name and renaming it at this juncture is not logical. Well haven’t people got used to Chennai, Kolkata soon enough from the erstwhile ‘Madras’ and ‘Calcutta’, others say.
