Diamond jubilee for him too

R.S.Bharathi

Alandur Municipal chairman R.S. Bharathi and his supporters had one more reason to celebrate August 15. He was born 90 minutes after the stroke of midnight on August 15, 1947.

State Ministers led by Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin, friends and family greeted him on the occasion of his 60th birthday — ‘mani vizha.’

There were many who had turned up to greet him since Mr. Bharathi grew up in the neighbourhood: he attended primary school in St. Thomas Mount, high school at Vepery and P.U.C. in Madras Christian College, Tambaram. Later he and Union Minister T.R.Baalu attended New College in the city. A long-time member of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Mr. Bharathi later enrolled in Law College, Chennai. He was elected Alandur Municipal Chairman first in 1986 and has been at the helm since then for four terms, barring the five years between 1991 and 1996, when there were no elections to local bodies. He is also president, council of Municipal Chairmen in the State.
