Capital areas reel under unscheduled power cuts

Staff Reporter

‘Voltage fluctuation plays havoc with appliances’

The maximum load recorded at 3,718 MW was up from Wednesday’s 3,279 MW

Sheila has asked DDA to hasten the process of allotting land to North Delhi Power Limited

NEW DELHI: The Capital reeled under power cuts on Thursday with many parts of the city reporting outages for up to six hours. While the Nathpa Jhakri plant supplying power from Himachal Pradesh remained incapacitated, Delhi’s power woes were compounded by the tripping of the Raj Ghat plant and a decrease in overall power generation.

The maximum load recorded at 3,718 MW was up from Wednesday’s 3,279 MW. The city also witnessed a dip in the frequency as neighbouring States continued to overdraw power from the Northern Grid.

Delhi, which generated 1,022 MW of power, was overdrawing 461 MW from the Northern Grid at 6-56 p.m. and faced a shortfall of about 200 MW. Residents across the city had to bear the brunt of unscheduled power cuts that lasted several hours at some places.

J. K. Bhagat of the Prasad Nagar Residents’ Welfare Association said the area faced power cuts twice in a single day, while Greater Kailash-I RWA members said the power cuts occurred four to five times, extending to more than an hour without any notice.

Vijay Raghavan of the Mehrauli RWA Federation said that apart from power cuts in the area that occur late at night, residents also have to put up with voltage fluctuation. He said voltage that swings from 20 volt to 300 volt and back to 20 volts has been playing havoc with appliances that blow out due to the frequent fluctuations in voltage.

Meanwhile Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has asked the Delhi Development Authority to hasten the process of allotting land to power distributor North Delhi Power Limited for setting up a 100 MW gas-based power plant in the city.

Ms. Dikshit met the DDA and the Delhi Jal Board officials on Thursday. While the DJB has agreed to supply water for the power plant, the DDA has set up a technical committee to review the NDPL proposal for setting up the plant.
