Woman alone at home duped

Special Correspondent

TAMBARAM: A 45-year-old woman staying alone at her house in Adambakkam was duped and robbed of gold jewels by a gang, suspected to be members of the ‘narikurava’ community.

Police said A. Geetha was alone in the house on Yadava Street, Adambakkam on Wednesday afternoon when three people knocked at the door. When she opened the door, they asked for water to drink. When she fetched it, the gang members, suspected to belong to the ‘narikurava’ community, drew her into a conversation. Some time later, they knocked at the door again, asking for some more water.

This time too, the woman obliged and fetched water. Only when she went inside the house after the group left, did she realise that the almirah was opened and about 20 sovereigns of gold jewels and Rs. 3,000 were missing.

The crime left the police baffled as this was the second such incident in less than 10 days. In a similar incident at Thoraipakkam, large quantities of g*old jewellery were burgled.

In neighbouring Madipakkam, burglars targeted a locked door in Kubera Nagar and took away gold jewellery weighing about nine sovereigns.

Sekar (64) working in a private company in Madipakkam, had gone to his son’s house in Maraimalai Nagar and when he returned on Wednesday, noticed the grille gate and wooden broken open and the jewels stolen from the almirah.
