GIVING VENT TO THEIR IRE: Residents of Sholinganallur at a meeting with Tambaram MLA S. R. Raja on Thursday.

TAMBARAM: Rsidents of Sholinganallur expressed anger on Thursday over a scheme of the Tamil Nadu Housing Board (TNHB) to acquire 80 acres of land for one of its projects in the area.

During an interaction with Tambaram MLA S.R.Raja at the Sholinganallur Town Panchayat office, women residents broke down while the men charged that the State Government seemed to be adamant in going ahead with the project even if it meant that close to 500 families would be affected.

Flaying the TNHB for its bid to acquire land in which about 500 families had already built houses, residents sought to know if housing plots, to be sold at high rates, had to be developed at the cost of demolishing houses constructed in the past decade and earlier.

Mr. Raja has been conducting grievance meetings in Town Panchayats in his constituency for the past one week and on Thursday, he visited Perungudi and Sholinganallur. And in Sholinganallur, residents waited patiently for more than an hour before giving a vent to their fears and anger.

They also took strong exception to the State Government’s announcement that residents who would be displaced by the proposed scheme had received compensation.

Explanation sought

When Mr. Raja sought an explanation from a senior officer of TNHB, the latter did not have the necessary records, plans or documents to furnish. The officer was at the receiving end of both the residents and the MLA.

Mr. Raja allayed residents’s fears, stating the State Government would give top priority to their welfare. Residents said they had all constructed houses in ‘patta’ land and also produced documents to prove their ownership. PMK has pledged its support to residents on this issue. They staged a demonstration in May and a few days ago, party founder, S. Ramadoss met the residents.
