MADURAI: Madurai division has been sanctioned 85 staff quarters this year, the maximum to be sanctioned in a year, the Divisional Railway Manager, Hemant Kumar, said. This would be in addition to work on 80 units of staff quarters under progress, he said while addressing the Independence Day celebrations here on Wednesday. Plans were afoot to construct additional suites at Holiday Homes in Madurai and Rameswaram. A community hall, under construction in Dindigul, would be completed by this year. Improvement of the Railway Hospital and the ‘Rail Kalyana Mandapam’ in Madurai were also on the cards, he said. Mr. Hemant Kumar asked the officials to give a push to the waste management project at Railway Colony. The division witnessed seven ‘consequential accidents’ in 2006–07, of which, all but one occurred at an unmanned level crossing. To improve public awareness, eight safety drives and 11 seminars, involving road-users and drivers were conducted besides safety yatras. The division had tied up with a local cable television channel to broadcast a film highlighting the importance of discipline at level crossings. “Safety continues to be our topmost priority for unmanned level crossings, we have gone in for a massive provision of limited use sub-ways to eliminate the level crossings themselves,” said Mr. Hemant Kumar. Security has been beefed up by acquiring more assets. The Minister of State for Railways, R. Velu, had asked the division to spend Rs.20 crore, he said. Mr. Hemant Kumar also announced cash awards for Railway Protection Force, Railway School and other departments. A cash award of Rs. 2,500 to the children of Southern Railway Women’s Welfare Organisation Matriculation School for their cultural performance. D.K. Nayak, Additional Divisional Railway Manager, M. Suyambulingam, Chief Engineer, Seema Kumar, president, Southern Railway Women’s Welfare Organisation, and Rethina Suyambulingam and T. Murugaraj, Assistant Security Commissioners, Railway Protection Force, also took part along with trade union representatives, railway officers and staff. Homage paid
The Madurai Kamaraj University Vice-Chancellor, P. Maruthamuthu, recalled the efforts of various leaders. He said that it was essential for students to involve themselves in work that would bring about a social renaissance. The Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry ,president, S. Rethinavelu, called for expeditious implementation of inter-linking of rivers. States should accord priority to linking rivers. This would facilitate completion of the project, he said. Labour Department personnel inspected hundreds of establishments and action was initiated against more than 200 shops for violating the provisions of National Festival and Holidays Act. The Janata Dal (Secular) State general secretary, K. John Moses, hoisted the National Flag at a function in which party cadres participated. The Day was also celebrated at Madurai District Central Cooperative Bank, Gomathipuram-Thendral Nagar Residents’ Welfare Association, Balamandiram Higher Secondary School, Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre, Yadava College, Madurai District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association and C.S.I. Arts and Science College for Women.
